Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art as of life.
- Joseph Conrad

is a vibrant art style that filters the subject matter through the emotions of the artist. For an example, consider Edvard Munch's, "The Scream". The artist brings a unique & personal interpretation to the work. The style is exemplified by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Franz Marc, Paul Klee and Amedeo Modigliani among others. It began, however, with a group of German artists known as the BRIGDE group, who painted between 1905 and 1925. This artist group believed that art had a very real influence on the structure of society and on the power struggles in politics.

Expressionism takes its cue from primitive art, Nordic styles of the Gothic period, the Post-Impressionists, and Art Nouveau. It was a reaction to the lifeless realism that was abundant in the late 19th century. It involves roughly hewn images where the artist expresses their perception of reality with wild outbursts of colour and warped perspectives. The style is even considered to be apparent in the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin.
